LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND FINANCIAL LITERACY IN OUR INSTITUTIONS - CHIEDOZIE VALENTINE OLUIGBO (Graduate Engineer)

Leadership Development and Financial literacy are vital to the success of any individual. While leadership is the ability to direct others by influence; financial literacy is the ability to understand how money works in the world. You cannot learn to ride a bicycle by reading a book. The same way is true with leadership development and financial literacy. You must practice!!! It is quite unfortunate that the school curriculum does not include this key aspect of our human endeavours. Most people struggle with money because in school the only learn how to work for money. Rarely do they learn to have money work for them. Albert Einstein defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. Each year, millions of graduates join the queue of unemployed youths believing so much in their degree certificates.
The biggest room in our world is always the room for self-improvement. Leadership development and financial literacy open the doors of opportunities and help us develop our limitless potentials. We find ourselves in an environment where some students and even lecturers view leadership positions as a fraudulent game of politics that should not be encouraged. In fact, they see it as opportunities for only those who are not serious with their academics. On the other hand, they view people investing to help their financial state as being over-ambitious. The truth is that when you have such notions, you limit yourself. Leadership Development and Financial literacy are not choices, they are prerequisite. Your potential is limitless and cannot be measured by the opinions and estimations of others.
This is a clarion call for us to think anew! We must have the ability to create opportunity where we see problems. Problem solving is education at its best. This will enhance our financial literacy. Furthermore, our world is in desperate need of good leaders whom they can trust. The journey of a thousand mile starts with a foot step. Embrace leadership development today, so that you can be the extra-ordinary man/woman tomorrow. Let us change our thoughts and attitude so that our actions can change, and so will our results.
