MATERIALS IMPERFECTIONS AND DEVELOPMENT OF YOUNG MINDS – Offor Uzochukwu George

Materials are as important as life itself. It is basic for mankind breakthrough in all form of civilization and growth. It is one of the parameter that helps us to measure time and age (Stone Age, Iron Age and our current and advanced stage). Materials in accordance with English mini dictionary, is an item needed for creating something. The aspiration of our family, lecturers, school management and friends of generating and executing ideas that will transform not only our lives but that of our generation and proceed into something useful, beautiful, elegant and most importantly useful. Like Engr. U. Mark has always said and as agreed by all engineers in metallurgy and materials department, materials are not perfect and they contain impurities. Materials which are required for growth and improvement of life yet as English Mini Dictionary defines imperfect, it is incomplete.

MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING - CHIKWE, CHUKWUMEREZE WISDOM

The discipline of Materials Science and Engineering can sometimes be subdivided into Materials Science and Materials Engineering sub-disciplines. Strictly speaking, Materials Science involves investigating the relationships that exist between the structures and properties of materials. In contrast, materials engineering is on the basis of these structure–property correlations, designing or engineering the structure of a material to produce a predetermined set of properties. From a functional perspective, the role of a materials scientist is to develop or synthesize new materials, whereas a materials engineer is called upon to create new products or systems using existing materials and/or to develop techniques for processing materials. Most graduates in materials programs are trained to be both materials scientists and materials engineers. Structure is at this point a nebulous term that deserves some explanation. In brief, the structure of a material usually relates to the arrangement of its internal components. Subatomic structure involves electrons within the individual atoms and interactions with their nuclei. On an atomic level, structure encompasses the organization of atoms or molecules relative to one another.

2016 NAMMES EXCURSION TO KOGI STATE.

The National Association of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering Students, Federal University of Technology, Owerri embarked on a three day field trip to Nigerian Iron Ore Mining Company (NIOMCO), Itakpe and Ajaokuta Steel Company all in Kogi State from May 17th to 20th, 2016 . They trip was planned by the Zealous NAMMES Executives in conjunction with the immediate NAMMES National President, Comr. Owums Henry. It was a wonderful experience for the students as it helped to incorporate the practical and real life experiences with the theoretical knowledge obtained in lecture halls. It will be noted that the field trip was the first of its kind in FUTO. Although there were many setbacks during the trip because it wasn’t an easy task moving from the east to the north, but we give thanks to God for his guidance and protection throughout the period of the field trip.

THE CLARION CALL – EZE JOSHUA N.

For some time now, I have pondered about the piece of write-up to put down for this publication, aside our primary aim of coming to this great citadel of learning. I do not see this as an opportunity to bring myself to limelight or to display my vocabulary prowess, so my motive is not a victim of prejudice. I see this as an opportunity to reach out not only to the environs of the department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering (FUTO), but to reach out to the students of all other departments in FUTO and in Nigeria, as I don’t believe in limitation. I see this as a clarion call to all students, literate youths, and illiterate youths who would come to know the content of this article to rise to the responsibility of the  saying our democracy.

THE DRIVING FORCE – Comr. ANOSIKE KELECHI C.

There will always be a plan that guides any journey before the commencement of such journey. The plans about the destination in view, goals to achieve and likely encounter on the journey are first analyzed by the traveller. The initial set plans gives the basis on which the driving force work upon. It is this force that instigates the motive and passion for a continuous move. However, the ultimate driving force plays its role in the quest for the provision of those necessities that contribute to human comfort ability, which makes men not to sit back and watch responsibilities that deserves attention, and putting in their effort in their respective services with dedication.

A Little reflection on this latin word, "Optimus Sequere”, meaning "follow the best", which is the watch word of men for excellence in their life endeavors.

For the purpose of this essay, I will be concerned with those that made impacts in the last five years. This does not in any way limit the possibility of another set of political gladiators that will spring up in the political arena of NAMMES in years to come since change is always constant. In no particular order, I will elucidate you on the political profiles of these young men and women (graduates and undergraduates) who have made valuable impacts in NAMMES and beyond.

SUPERSTITIOUS TALE OF THE WICKED - Comr. Ezirim Elvis (President)

The myth of the great old evil spirit in MME has been a story told for decades now. It is said that the evil spirit is the cause for the department's first class starvation. According to the myth, it moves round the school monitoring the scripts of MME students, possessing the lecturers and hence causing the department's scripts to be marked down, not also forgetting the numerous missing scripts caused by the evil spirit.

No wonder the perplexed students of this department keep complaining, some claim to have been "over-prepared" for the course and others do claim to have "over-jacked" while a few others also claim to have reviewed the course "back to back" but yet wondrous result keep appearing on their score sheets.

EDITORIAL: VOICE OF THE HOD - AN ADVICE TO THE FRESHERS.

The editorial crew of the Voice of NAMMES was privileged to have a short oral interview with Engr. Prof. C. N. Anyakwo; Head, Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, FUTO. During the course of the interview he pointed out so many pieces of advice to the newly admitted students of the department and to the older students at large. Below is an excerpt.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AND FINANCIAL LITERACY IN OUR INSTITUTIONS - CHIEDOZIE VALENTINE OLUIGBO (Graduate Engineer)

Leadership Development and Financial literacy are vital to the success of any individual. While leadership is the ability to direct others by influence; financial literacy is the ability to understand how money works in the world. You cannot learn to ride a bicycle by reading a book. The same way is true with leadership development and financial literacy. You must practice!!! It is quite unfortunate that the school curriculum does not include this key aspect of our human endeavours. Most people struggle with money because in school the only learn how to work for money. Rarely do they learn to have money work for them. Albert Einstein defined insanity as “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results”. Each year, millions of graduates join the queue of unemployed youths believing so much in their degree certificates.

PZ CUSSONS STORMS FUTO – Hon. Comr. Amb. Christopher Titus Udo (MSRC, 2013/2014 Assembly)

The atmosphere was quite serene and the weather was welcoming as FUTOITES trope out in their numbers to the number one state-of-arts lecture theatre with over 1,000 seating capacity. One of the greatest observation remains that the student’s shoes were still shiny as they had being before leaving their home that morning following the previous night downpour after more than three months of no rain. Before 9:45am, students from various departments of the prestigious university has arrived the venue for the PZ cussons recruitment exercise. The impatient student’s dashed out for their respective academic activities.

THE NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE – Engr. U. S. Ikele (B. Eng, M. Eng. (FUTO))

Examination Malpractice is any illegal act committed by a student single handedly or in collaboration with fellow students, parents, supervisors and invigilators before, during and after examination in order to obtain undeserved marks or grades. Factors that contribute to examination malpractice include:
  • Students factor: Students who are lazy and do not prepare adequately for an examination will most likely engage in examination malpractice. This is because since they do not want to fail, cheating becomes the only option. They quest to make good grades on a platter of gold also makes students to end up cheating.
